Sri Lanka’s parliamentary speaker is accusing the president of repeatedly misleading him – as a constitutional crisis enters its second week.
It was triggered when President Maithripala Sirisena appointed Mahinda Rajapaksa as prime minister 10 days ago, but the speaker says Sirisena is unfairly postponing parliament’s vote on the decision.
Meanwhile, Ranil Wickremesinghe, the prime minister fired by the president, has refused to step down, saying he is still the prime minister and he has the parliamentary votes to prove it.
